FG Releases ₦2.3bn to Settle ASUU Salary and Promotion Arrears

The Federal Government has released ₦2.3 billion to clear the backlog of salaries and promotion arrears owed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

A statement by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, quoted the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, as saying the payment, representing Batch 8 arrears, was processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF).

Dr. Alausa said the move reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to resolving long-standing welfare and funding issues in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

He added that the government is finalising the release of pension remittances to NUPEMCO and plans to mainstream the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) into staff salaries from 2026 to ensure regular and sustainable payments.

The minister noted that while the government remains open to dialogue with unions, all agreements must be realistic and within approved budgetary limits.

Dr. Alausa expressed optimism that ongoing reforms and fiscal interventions would restore stability and confidence in the nation’s university system.
