FG Sets 20-Year Rail Vision to Link Every States

The Federal Government has announced plans to unveil a 20-year National Railway Development Roadmap aimed at achieving full rail connectivity across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT.

Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, revealed this at the Seventh National Transport Conference of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIOTA) in Abuja.

According to Opeifa, the roadmap aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda and leverages recent legislative reforms that place railway development on the concurrent list—allowing states to access and operate on national rail corridors without extra cost.

Lagos and Plateau States have already begun utilizing the policy, with more states expected to join soon.

The NRC boss also unveiled the Corporation’s long-term strategy, Vision 2-5-10-20, which aims to optimize existing rail assets in two years, transition to electric traction by year five, double rail capacity in a decade, and reach 60,000 kilometers of rail network nationwide within 20 years.
