FOI Lawsuit Forces NASS to Release Limited Legislative Activity Data

Nigeria’s National Assembly has released partial information on its activities following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request filed by AdvoKC Foundation, though key financial details were withheld.

The response, dated March 2, 2026, came weeks after the group filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court of Nigeria seeking full disclosure of the legislature’s finances and operations.

The reply was issued by the Legal Services Directorate on behalf of the Clerk to the National Assembly of Nigeria.

According to the document, the Senate held 81 plenary sittings and one joint sitting between June 2024 and May 2025.

However, the response excluded several critical elements of the FOI request, particularly details on budget allocations and spending.

AdvoKC had requested full records of the National Assembly’s approved budgets for 2023 and 2024 and documentation showing how the funds were spent.

While some data on Senate activities was released, no information was provided on the legislative work of the House of Representatives of Nigeria.

Reacting, AdvoKC Project Director Habib Sheidu described the response as incomplete but a sign that legal pressure was working.

He noted that with the National Assembly’s 2024 budget estimated at about ₦344.85 billion, Nigerians deserve full transparency, adding that the ongoing case will continue until comprehensive disclosure is achieved.
