Google has published its 2025 Year in Search report, offering a revealing snapshot of the topics and moments that shaped the curiosity of Nigerians throughout the year.
The data highlights what dominated national conversations—from politics and entertainment to viral culture and food trends.
Political developments were among the strongest drivers of search activity. Senator Natasha Akpoti emerged as the most searched Nigerian personality, reflecting her increasing influence on the national stage.
Interest also surged following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, prompting Nigerians to revisit his administration and legacy.
Global events—including the Israel–Iran War and the US Elections—further contributed to high search volumes.
The nation also mourned notable figures such as former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai and Pope Francis, whose deaths drew widespread attention.
Entertainment continued to play a central role in shaping online behaviour. Nigerian music fans searched for a mix of gospel and Afrobeats hits, with “Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)” by Tkeyz featuring Steve Hills topping trending songs.
“Joy Is Coming” by Fido and “With You” by Davido and Omah Lay also ranked highly. In film and television, director Kemi Adetiba stood out as one of the most searched personalities, propelled by the success of her hit series To Kill a Monkey, the most searched Nigerian show of 2025.
Cultural curiosity drove significant search interest as Nigerians sought to decode viral phenomena and emerging trends.
“What is Labubu?” became the most searched question of the year, while interest in the meaning of “Achalugo” surged following its use in the popular film Love in Every Word.
Culinary searches revealed diverse tastes, with Nigerians exploring recipes such as Chinchin, Pornstar Martini, Ginger Shots, Hummus, and Asun Rice.
According to Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Google West Africa, the Year in Search report serves as more than a data roundup.
He described it as an “unfiltered mirror” of the topics, personalities, and cultural moments that collectively shaped Nigeria’s online curiosity in 2025.
