Efforts to promote gender equity and inclusivity in Nigeria’s scientific landscape are gaining momentum, with growing recognition for individuals championing women’s participation in science and research.
The Ibadan branch of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is set to honour Prince Cletus Ilobanafor, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CEOAfrica, for his outstanding support for research development and community-centred scientific engagement. The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Oyo Road, Ibadan. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. with a workshop, followed by the award presentation at 11:00 a.m.
An International programme unit of UNESCO, OWSD supports scientific research, leadership, and capacity building among women in developing countries. Its Ibadan branch draws membership from top institutions including the University of Ibadan, The Polytechnic Ibadan, IITA, NIHORT, CRIN, FRIN, and NISER.
Prince Ilobanafor will receive the “Friend of OWSD” award, which recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing the participation of women in science and allied research fields. According to OWSD Ibadan, Ilobanafor has played a pivotal role in amplifying the visibility of women scientists and encouraging research initiatives addressing key societal challenges in areas such as health, agriculture, and sustainable development.
In a statement, the organisation commended his efforts in strengthening research networks and mentorship opportunities for women in STEM and the social sciences. His contributions, OWSD noted, have served as a source of inspiration for students and professionals across all stages of their careers.
The event will be hosted by NISER’s Director-General, Professor Antonia Simbine, and is expected to attract researchers, academics, policymakers, and development partners. Discussions will focus on strategies to further deepen gender equity in science and research.
OWSD continues to advocate for inclusive research environments, asserting that empowering women in science is critical to achieving broader national development goals.
