Hajj 2026: Lagos Begins Airlift of Pilgrims

The first batch of Lagos State intending pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj has arrived safely in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, marking the commencement of the state’s airlift operations for this year’s pilgrimage.

The inaugural flight, carrying 343 pilgrims aboard Flynas Airline Airbus XY8504, landed at the King AbdulAzeez International Airport in Madinah after departing the Pilgrims and Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, at 6:26 p.m. on Friday.

The pilgrims comprised 169 males and 174 females.

Speaking on the development, Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs and Amir-ul-Hajj, Alhaji Olanrewaju Ibrahim Layode, assured pilgrims and their families that the state government would prioritise their welfare throughout their stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

According to him, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had approved all necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience.

“The Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has given approval for necessary arrangements to ensure that pilgrims receive adequate support both here in Nigeria and in Saudi Arabia. We encourage all pilgrims to remain law-abiding, prayerful, and be worthy ambassadors of Lagos State and Nigeria throughout their stay in the Holy Land,” Layode said.

Also speaking, Commissioner for Operations, Inspectorate and Licensing at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Anofiu Elegushi, commended the orderly conduct of the airlift exercise and praised the pilgrims for their patience and discipline.

“Today’s successful airlift is a reflection of the tireless efforts put in place by the State Government and NAHCON. We are delighted that the pilgrims are departing in an atmosphere of peace, orderliness, and proper coordination. We pray for a successful Hajj exercise and safe return for everyone,” he said.

In the same vein, Special Adviser to the Governor on Islamic Matters and Chairman of the 2026 Hajj Ad-hoc Committee, Dr. Abdullahi Jebe, described the successful departure of the inaugural flight as a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to excellence in pilgrimage operations.

He appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, NAHCON officials, Flynas Airline, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), security agencies and other stakeholders for their support and cooperation.

Some of the pilgrims also expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation and coordination by the Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, noting that the seamless take-off reflected the government’s commitment to pilgrims’ welfare, safety and comfort.

Lagos State is expected to airlift about 1,600 intending pilgrims for this year’s Hajj exercise.

The second and third batches are scheduled to depart on Sunday, May 10, while the fourth batch will leave on Tuesday, May 12. The final batch is expected to depart on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
