Heavy Security, Thugs Take Over Lagos State Assembly

The leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State Assembly is far from being over with the complex taking over by armed security personnel and thugs.

A visit to the place by our correspondent also showed that workers did not come to the office a day after the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa came in with armed security men declaring that he had returned.

Governor’s Road in Alausa is one of the most secure areas of the Lagos State capital, Ikeja, as the road connects the Governor’s Office known as Lagos House and the State Assembly with the State Secretariat and other agencies of government.

Commercial vehicles are barred on the road, while it is unusual to have vehicles packed along the road or people gathering in groups.

However, since Thursday when the former Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa came into the House with armed security personnel and supporters, everything has changed.

When Radio Nigeria visited the Assembly complex on Friday, there was a heavy presence of armed security personnel and thugs on Governor’s Road and inside the premises.

It was also observed that parliamentary workers, who ran helter-skelter out of the Assembly premises on Thursday did not report to duty the following day, while the premises had been without electricity and no one to power the generators.

After the hearing of a case at the State High Court filed by the former Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, the substantive Speaker, Mojisola Meranda said her office had been broken into with some personal effects damaged, while saying her full security squad is yet to be restored.

Some lawmakers loyal to Mrs Meranda went to the premises of the Assembly in Alausa Ikeja in a show of solidarity and control.

The lawmakers led by the Deputy Speaker, Fatai Mojeed went around the premises before posing in front of the Chamber for a group photograph.

Mr Mojeed claimed that everything was in order. However, the only Labour Party member of the House, Stella Osafile disagreed.

The Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Stephen Ogundipe admitted that security of the Speaker and the House was still an issue.

Soon after the inspection, the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, drove into the premises and the lawmakers loyal to the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda left in various vehicles, while the security officials and thugs asked everyone to leave the complex.

Immediately, the Assembly gates were closed with the security operatives saying they were acting on instructions.

It is not yet clear who is calling the shots at the Lagos State Assembly, but it is clear that the political crisis is far from being over.
