History Makers Bayelsa Queens Shine in CAF Women’s Champions League

Bayelsa Queens wrote their names in history books by becoming the first Nigerian team to qualify for the knockout phase of CAF Women’s Champions League.

A second half brace by winger Mercy Itimi ensured a 3-0 win for Queens over Egyptian side Wadi Degla today in a final group B matchup of the ongoing championship in Morocco.

Juliet Sunday opened scoring for the Nigerian champions in the 1st half which all but locked up 2nd place and a semi final ticket for the Prosperity Girls.

Log leaders and reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns of South hammered TP Mazembe 3-0 to finish with a perfect record of 9 points, 3 ahead of the Nigerian ladies.

No Nigerian team had made it out of the group stage of the CAF Women’s Champions League as last year’s representatives Rivers Angels bowed out of the inaugural 2021 edition in the group phase after losses to Sundowns and AS AFAR.

Revenge could be on the minds of Bayelsa Queens when they face same Moroccan team and hosts AS FAR in Wednesday’s, November 9, semifinal which kicks off at 9pm, Nigeria time.
