Ibom Air Passenger Charged with Obstructing Flight, Causing Public Nuisance

Ms. Chiamaka Don Ubani, the passenger who caused the disruption of an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Abuja on January 8, 2025, has been charged to court.

The incident, which resulted in the cancellation of the flight and left 89 passengers stranded, has led to legal action against Ubani.According to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, Ubani faces two charges.

These include, intentionally obstructing the aircraft door an offense, punishable under Section 436 of the Akwa Ibom State Criminal Code, alleges that Ubani maliciously prevented the aircraft door from closing, hindering the flight’s departure.

The second charge is constituting a public nuisance, under Section 196(1)(f) of the Criminal Code, states that Ubani obstructed the flight, causing inconvenience and damage to other passengers and the general public.

Ms. Ubani was released on bail on January 10, 2025, and is scheduled to appear in Uyo Magistrate Court on February 4, 2025.

Mr. Achimugu urged all passengers to refrain from unruly behavior at airports and onboard aircraft, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order and safety within the aviation sector.
