ICAO Auditors Arrive in Abuja to Assess Nigeria’s Aviation Security Measures

A team of auditors from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, to initiate the 2024 ICAO Universal Security Audit Programme (USAP) using the Continuous Monitoring Approach (CMA) for Lagos and Abuja airports.

The two-week audit, concluding on March 22, 2024, will encompass various aspects, including Inflight Security, Passenger and Baggage Security, Acts of Unlawful Interference, Facilitation, Legislation, Training, Quality Control Function, Operations, and Cargo, Mail, and Catering.

The Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Micheal Achimugu in a statement says, the four-member team, led by Callum Vine, includes James Mabala, Tebogo Mphela, and Alagie Jeng.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, welcomed the auditors, emphasizing the program’s commitment to maintaining the highest security standards in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Mr. Keyamo highlighted the Universal Security Audit Program as a collective effort to bolster defenses against evolving threats.

The Acting Director General of Civil Aviation, Nigeria, Capt. Chris Ona Najomo, outlined the objectives of the USAP CMA, emphasizing its role in enhancing global aviation security through continuous monitoring and auditing.

Capt. Najomo expressed optimism about Nigeria’s improved rating, citing industry transformations and the administration’s commitment to secure, safe, and efficient air transportation.

He assured support and cooperation for a smooth audit process.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), responsible for the National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP), played a crucial role in preparing for the audit.

The Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organization (BAGASOO) conducted a Mock Audit in Lagos and Abuja airports in early March 2024 to ensure Nigeria’s success in the upcoming exercise.
