Birth registration is as old as man. Though, it started by writing on the wall, market days, festive periods, and farming seasons among others. Then, such documentations were just formality as no benefits were attached to it.
However, over the years when it became apparent that development cannot be achieved without knowing the number of people living in a geographical area, it became paramount to take account of everyone and document deliveries in order to get it right.
Today, the benefits of birth registration stand out because it is the bedrock of having a good life.
So, it is on record that without the certificate a child does not belong to any state, therefore, such a child will not be recognised as a member of that society Which means the rights of the child have been taken away. To this end, a birth certificate is an integral part of the existence of a child.
The Head of the Department of Vital Registration, National Population Commission, Lagos State, Mr Ikechukwu Nwannukwu, says birth registration has many benefits and the basics among them are that birth registration gives a child the first identity in life.
Nwannukwu explained that the benefit of identity is the foundation to which other benefits of birth registration can be added.
He said; “Birth registration is used for enrolment into the school. For instance, in Lagos, no child gets admission into the school without providing a birth certificate. Birth registration or birth certificate is also used when somebody wants to get an international passport.
Mallam Aliyu Abbas, Program officer and Immunization controller Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (PHCDA), says
in the last 3 to 5 yrs, the National Population Commission had its representatives at the Local Government and in other facilities but it is no longer so, as the representatives have all been withdrawn leaving the health workers to handle the services.
“Before now, everyone had their schedule but the present problem of human resources which is a global issue has made it more difficult, the reason for the lack of adequate information on Birth Registration”.
He explained that, now, the state is working hand in hand with the National Population Commission, NPoC that those available can be given responsibilities having been told what to do.
” For instance, if a pregnant woman visits with a child for immunization, the health worker on the ground will have to attend to the woman, so the workload is much. Now the state is practising task aggression for activities conducted.
