The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has revised its operational plans to align with a shortened electoral timeline ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, made this known in Lagos at the opening of a three-day capacity-building workshop for National Electoral Commissioners and senior management staff. He was represented by National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu.
According to him, recent amendments to the Electoral Act have reduced the mandatory Notice of Election period from 360 days to 300 days, creating a more compressed electoral calendar that requires early preparation.
In response, the commission has released a revised timetable, scheduling Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly polls will hold on February 6, 2027.
Prof. Amupitan said the workshop was designed to strengthen institutional capacity, particularly in procurement, strategic planning, and other critical operational areas.
He added that beyond conducting elections, INEC must continuously improve its systems and processes to safeguard the transparency, credibility, and integrity of the electoral process.
The chairman urged participants to actively engage in the sessions, share experiences, and adopt innovative strategies to address emerging challenges ahead of the next electoral cycle.
