IPCR Urges Citizen–Security Collaboration After Niger Attacks

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has called for stronger collaboration between citizens and security agencies to address rising insecurity across Nigeria, following deadly attacks in parts of Niger State that left about 60 people dead and several others abducted.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, IPCR Director-General, Dr Joseph Ochogwu, described the attacks as desperate acts by fleeing bandits, insurgents, and terrorist groups currently under sustained pressure from security forces.

According to the institute, the assaults were intended to instil fear and intimidate residents, especially in communities where ongoing security operations are underway.

IPCR noted that improved cooperation between citizens and security agencies would help strengthen trust and confidence between the government and the public.

The recent attacks, reportedly carried out by suspected bandits, occurred in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas of Niger State, where several residents, including children, were killed.

The violence comes less than a month after more than 300 pupils, students, and staff of St Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, were abducted in the same area.
