ISPON Lagos Chairman urges adoption of AI for safer workplaces

The Chairman of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) Lagos State Branch, Mr. Olusola Ogunleye, says, the role of AI and digitalization is crucial in revolutionizing health and safety in the workplace.

He stressed that traditional approaches to workplace health and safety are no longer sufficient in the face of modern challenges.

The ISPON Lagos Branch chairman stated this at a news conference in Lagos in commemoration of the International Labour Organization, ILO, World Day for Safety and Health at Work (WDSHW-2025) with the theme: ‘Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work’.

According to him, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and digitalization is essential to creating safer and more efficient work environments.

Mr. Ogunleye called on governments, industries, and institutions to collaborate in addressing the technological challenges posed by AI and digitalization, prioritizing ethical considerations, data privacy, and inclusivity.

He stressed the need for effective collaboration to create a future where health and safety are continually revolutionized.

The ISPON Chairman urged governments to establish clear regulatory frameworks, provide training programmes for workers, invest in safe and reliable AI tools.

Others are, to promote research and collaboration to address safety and health challenges related to AI and digitalization.

He also reaffirmed the importance of ensuring ethical implementation, raising awareness, strengthening enforcement and compliance, and addressing energy and connectivity gaps.

By working together, Mr. Ogunleye believes Nigeria can create a balanced environment where the advantages of AI and digitalization are maximized, while potential safety and health risks are minimized.

The ISPON chairman reiterated that, the future of workplace health and safety is bright, and it is essential to embrace AI and digitalization as allies in the quest for innovation, well-being, and a better tomorrow.
