What began as a routine charity photo session at Barcelona’s Camp Nou in 2007 has become one of football’s most extraordinary stories, as Lionel Messi prepares to face Spain’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, for the first time on the sport’s biggest stage.

The remarkable journey, first reported by BBC Sport, links two generations of football greatness through a photograph taken nearly two decades ago.
It captured a young 20-year-old Messi cradling and bathing a five-month-old Lamine Yamal, long before either could have imagined the paths their careers would take.
The iconic image resurfaced during UEFA Euro 2024 after Yamal’s father shared it on social media with the caption, “The beginning of two legends.”

Since then, it has become a symbol of football’s passing of the torch from one Barcelona icon to another.
Photographer Joan Monfort, who documented the moment, described the coincidence as “a true miracle of destiny.”
According to Monfort, the photo shoot formed part of a charity initiative organised by Barcelona, UNICEF and the Catalan newspaper Sport.
Families who won a raffle had the opportunity to have their babies photographed with Barcelona first-team players, and by chance, Yamal’s family was paired with Messi.
Monfort recalled that Messi, then a shy and reserved young footballer, initially appeared unsure of how to handle a baby but quickly adapted to the situation, while little Lamine remained cheerful throughout the session.
At the time, Messi was only beginning to establish himself at Barcelona and still wore the club’s number 19 jersey.
A year later, he inherited the famous number 10 shirt after Ronaldinho’s departure and went on to become one of football’s greatest players.
Today, history appears to have come full circle.
Now 39, Messi is seeking another World Cup triumph with Argentina, while 19-year-old Yamal has already established himself among football’s brightest young stars, winning multiple domestic titles with Barcelona and helping Spain lift the UEFA European Championship.
Born to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, Yamal grew up in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood near Barcelona. Despite financial challenges during his childhood, his parents ensured he pursued his football dream.
Speaking previously about his upbringing, Yamal paid tribute to his parents for their sacrifices, saying he could never repay everything they did to support his career.
The famous photograph has since been displayed on banners by Spain supporters, symbolising the unlikely connection between two football generations.
For Monfort, seeing Messi and Yamal finally share the same pitch represents the perfect ending to a story that began in a Barcelona dressing room nearly 20 years ago.
Whether Sunday produces another unforgettable chapter remains to be seen, but one photograph has already secured its place as one of football’s most remarkable stories.
