JOHESU Rejects Calls to Suspend Nationwide Strike, Insists on Consultations

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has resisted calls to suspend its ongoing nationwide strike, insisting that any decision on the industrial action must be taken collectively by its member unions.

JOHESU President, Dr Kabiru Minjibir, said the union had informed the Federal Government’s negotiation committee that it could not unilaterally call off the strike without first consulting its members.

According to Minjibir, although the committee appealed to the unions to suspend the strike following recent engagements, JOHESU declined and instead resolved to convene an expanded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to deliberate on the matter.

JOHESU, in collaboration with the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations, commenced an indefinite nationwide strike on November 15 over the Federal Government’s failure to implement the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), as well as unresolved welfare and systemic challenges affecting health workers. In response to the industrial action, President Bola Tinubu constituted a high-level committee to engage with the unions and negotiate a resolution.
