Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced the commencement of a mass metering programme across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states under the $550 million World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP).
The initiative is designed to bridge the metering gap, end estimated billing, and enhance efficiency in electricity distribution.
Under the scheme, no fewer than 128,000 prepaid meters will be installed at no cost to customers within KEDCO’s franchise areas.
The company said the exercise represents a major step toward improving transparency, service delivery, and customer satisfaction.
KEDCO’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abubakar Jimeta, described the project as a critical part of the company’s transformation agenda.
He said the metering drive goes beyond providing devices to ensuring accountability, reliability, and long-term financial sustainability in the power sector.
Jimeta explained that priority will be given to unmetered customers and the replacement of faulty meters, following a structured and transparent plan.
He added that new service connections will continue under the existing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework.
The KEDCO boss emphasised that the DISREP meters are completely free and warned customers against making any payments to company staff or agents.
He urged residents to cooperate fully with installation teams to ensure a smooth rollout.
The World Bank-backed DISREP initiative aims to strengthen the financial and technical performance of Nigeria’s distribution companies through large-scale installation of advanced prepaid meters and Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS), promoting fairness, transparency, and reliability in the nation’s power supply chain.
