At the 36th International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers Association (IFATCA) Africa and Middle East Regional Meeting held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, called on African nations to urgently enhance their Air Traffic Management (ATM) capacity.
Keyamo underscored that while advanced technology is essential, the real cornerstone of aviation safety lies in the continuous training and retention of skilled Air Traffic Controllers.
He commended their daily dedication, which he said ensures the safety of millions of air travelers across the continent.
Highlighting Nigeria’s commitment, the Minister revealed that through the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the government is modernizing Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) systems and upgrading ATM infrastructure.
He added that ongoing initiatives include expanding training programs and introducing mental health and wellbeing support for air traffic personnel.
Keyamo also emphasized the need for stronger regional collaboration to accelerate safety oversight and certification processes, noting that “aviation success demands a borderless, collective commitment.”
He urged all delegates to move beyond dialogue and take decisive action to build a resilient, highly skilled, and future-ready aviation workforce across Africa and the Middle East.
