Killer of Citi-heights Hotel Guest Bags 28yrs Jail term

A Chef, Joshua Usulor has been convicted and sentenced to 28 years in prison by a Special Offences Court in Lagos, for the murder of a lawyer, Mrs Feyisayo Obot

Joshua Usulor who was convicted after pleading guilty was said to have committed the offence at Citi-heights Hotel, Opebi, Lagos State, on January 26, 2019, where he and the deceased had lodged in different rooms.

The prosecution led by Mrs O.A. Bajulaiye-Bishi, had said Usulor, a resident of Number 30, Fadiya Street, Ketu, Lagos, went into Obot’s hotel room to rob her in order to offset his outstanding hotel bills.

The deceased who was an employee of an Abuja-based non-governmental organisation – Save the Children – was in Lagos to write a project management examination.

She was killed on the day she was due to leave the hotel.

Usulor had earlier pleaded not guilty to the offence, but later entered a plea bargain agreement with Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP.

The DPP had in the agreement approved a term of 21 years’ imprisonment which would begin from the date of Usulor’s remand.

However, the presiding Judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo rejected the proposed prison term, saying that it was too lenient and increased it to 30 years in line with Section 75 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, but later reduced it to 28 years following
a plea for leniency by Mr Spurgeon Ataene, Counsel to Joshua Usulor.

Ataene submitted that Usulor was remorseful, adding that he was a young man with a promising future.
