Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed deep concern over the rising wave of insecurity and the rapid spread of militia groups across the country.
He warned that Nigeria is drifting into a dangerous phase as non-state actors increasingly take up arms.
Kwankwaso faulted what he called the Federal Government’s tacit approval for governors to set up vigilante outfits without proper training or clear regulatory frameworks.
According to him, this shift of responsibility suggests that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is overwhelmed by the worsening security situation.
The former Kano governor, in a post on his verified X handle, stressed that securing lives and property remains a constitutional duty of the Federal Government, working with states and local councils.
He lamented that the current permissive environment is fueling the spread of small arms and encouraging political actors to float personalised militias, thereby endangering national stability.
His comment comes as former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, launches the recruitment of 12,000 independent security personnel in Kano.
Former KAROTA boss, Baffa Dan-Agundi, said the initiative seeks to provide opportunities for individuals disengaged by the state government.
Similarly, ex-Hisbah commander Sheikh Harooun Ibn Sina, who now heads the Independent Hisbah Fisabilillah under the Ganduje Foundation, insisted the group is a voluntary organisation with no ties to the current Kano State government.
