Lagos Arrests 46 in Fresh Crackdown on Open Defecation

The Lagos State Government has intensified its sanitation enforcement drive with the arrest of 46 offenders during coordinated early-morning operations across Lagos Island.

The operation, carried out by the Anti-Open Defecation Squad of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), covered Ebute Ero, Apongbon, Isale Eko, Marina, CMS, Obalende, and Adeniji Adele.

LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the suspects were apprehended within two days following sustained surveillance of known sanitation blackspots.

All offenders have been transferred to the headquarters of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) in Oshodi for investigation and prosecution under state environmental laws.

According to the agency, the enforcement exercise is part of broader efforts to eliminate open defecation, protect public health, and maintain sanitation standards in densely populated commercial areas.

Residents and business operators were advised to use approved public toilet facilities and avoid practices that threaten environmental sustainability.

Authorities also warned that arrests and prosecutions would continue as monitoring intensifies statewide.

The development follows last week’s conviction of 17 offenders by a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade Oshodi.

Each offender was fined ₦40,000 or sentenced to one month in prison for open defecation and urination.
