The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Hon. Victor Akande, a former lawmaker who represented Ojo Constituency I in the Assembly.
Hon. Akande, a distinguished legal practitioner and two-term legislator, died on Wednesday, July 30.
In a statement, Speaker Obasa described his death as a profound loss not only to the Lagos Assembly but to the state as a whole. He praised the late lawmaker’s unwavering dedication to public service and his legislative impact during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
“Hon. Akande was a committed and diligent parliamentarian who served his constituents with passion and integrity. His contributions, particularly as Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC, were remarkable,” Obasa noted.
The Speaker highlighted Akande’s legal acumen and his devotion to using the law as a tool for justice and public good.
“He championed human rights, advocated for electoral transparency, and played a pivotal role in strengthening the legislative framework of our state. His voice was a force in our debates, and his insights often guided policy in the right direction.”
Obasa described Akande’s passing as a stark reminder of the fragility of life, stating that the late lawmaker would be remembered for his integrity, commitment to justice, and enduring legacy of service to the people of Ojo and Lagos State.
The Speaker extended heartfelt condolences to the Akande family, his friends, and constituents, praying for strength and comfort in this time of grief. He also assured them that the Lagos State House of Assembly stands with them in mourning and will continue to honour Hon. Akande’s memory.
