The Lagos State House of Assembly has officially received a petition from members of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos Council, seeking urgent legislative intervention in the operations of ride-hailing companies across the state.
The petition, backed by a peaceful protest, was presented by the union’s spokesperson, Azeez Jaiyesimi, who outlined escalating challenges confronting app-based drivers in Lagos.
Jaiyesimi drew lawmakers’ attention to worsening conditions in the sector, particularly the surge in insecurity.
He cited increasing cases of attacks on drivers, some fatal, alongside incidents of vehicle theft linked to criminal activities.
He further criticized the absence of effective response systems and compensation frameworks for affected drivers, stressing the urgent need for legislative protection and enforcement.
The protesters also expressed dissatisfaction with previous engagements involving ride-hailing companies, noting that such discussions have failed to produce binding or enforceable outcomes.
They urged the Assembly to strengthen regulatory oversight and ensure compliance within the industry.
Responding on behalf of the Speaker, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, lawmaker Temitope Adewale commended the drivers for maintaining a peaceful and orderly demonstration.
Adewale emphasized adherence to legislative procedures, explaining that the petition would proceed through relevant committees for review before being debated at plenary.
He assured the petitioners of a fair and comprehensive assessment of their concerns.
He also appealed to all stakeholders to remain calm and law-abiding as the legislative process unfolds, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to delivering a just and sustainable resolution.
Other lawmakers present at the protest included Aro Moshood Abiodun and Apata Samuel, who acknowledged the grievances raised by the drivers.
