The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the Commissioner of Police, Mr Moshood Jimoh, and other security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering using the latest security apparatus, while taking swift action against miscreants extorting motorists across the state.
The resolution came during plenary under a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by Mr. Ganiyu Sanni, who decried the increasing harassment of road users by street urchins.
“This level of extortion is not only unacceptable but dangerous. It compromises the safety and dignity of our citizens,” he stated.
Supporting the motion, Mr. Kehinde Joseph noted that the disturbing trend poses a growing threat to road safety. “We cannot allow this menace to fester. It’s already affecting the free flow of traffic and the overall sense of security on our roads.”
Mr. Desmond Elliot emphasized the importance of active surveillance and suggested collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
“Many of these individuals operate under the influence of drugs,” he said. “We must address the root cause as well as the symptoms.”
Mr. Aro Moshood called for the deployment of dedicated officers to monitor major roads and black spots. “It is high time the government takes the bull by the horns,” he declared.
Commending the mover of the motion, Mr. Adebola Shabi called on Local Government Chairmen to be proactive in curbing the menace.
“This issue must be tackled at the grassroots,” he said. “Installing CCTV at black spots and creating job opportunities for youths will reduce the appeal of such criminal activity.”
Mr. Obafemi Saheed added that the state government has made significant investments in security infrastructure and must not allow such acts of extortion to undermine progress.
“We’ve spent billions on security. Let’s ensure those investments yield results.”
In an unrelated development, the House directed all sub-committees to commence the quarterly review of the Y2025 Budget to ensure timely oversight and avoid fiscal lapses. The Committee on Economic Planning and Budget was specifically tasked with reporting its findings to the House without delay.
Following deliberations, the House adjourned sine die.
