Lagos Begins Inspection Ahead of Akran of Badagry Funeral

The Lagos State Government has commenced inspection of key venues ahead of the funeral ceremonies for the late Akran of Badagry.

Speaking during the inspection, the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who also chairs the Central Planning Committee for the funeral, said the event goes beyond a mere celebration.

“Activities for the late Akran of Badagry burial are not just ceremonial, but will reflect rich cultural and traditional heritage,” she stated.

According to her, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the committee to assess major venues for the programme, including the church and the New Central Palace in Badagry.

She described the burial as both a state and culturally significant occasion, noting that multiple sub-committees have been working to ensure a successful outing.

Week-Long Programme Schedule

Barrister Salu-Hundeyin disclosed that arrangements have been made to accommodate large crowds expected at the event.

The week-long funeral programme is scheduled to hold from April 20 to April 26, 2026, with the main ceremony taking place on Saturday, April 25, at Badagry Grammar School.

A memorial service will follow at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral.

Stakeholders Commend Government Efforts

Responding, Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee for the funeral and former Director of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Lagos Operations, Adeyinka Amosu, commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to ensuring a befitting burial for the late monarch.-

Members of the inspection team included community leaders, government officials, and traditional representatives such as:Chairman, Badagry Local Government, Babatunde Hunpe; Chairman, Badagry West LCDA, Ibrahim Yemaren; Member, Lagos State House of Assembly (Badagry Constituency I), Solomon Bonu, Jimi Ahisu, Abiodun Hundeyin, Babatunde Mesewaku.

Also present were members of the royal family, including Princess Medeyonmi Oketunde-Akran, Prince Seyon Akran, and Princess Senami Ibidun-Akran Sewhude Akande, among others.
