Lagos Delivers N130B Social Support to 18.5 Million Residents — Budget Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has disbursed N130 billion in social support initiatives, reaching 18.5 million residents over the past year, in a bid to cushion the effects of economic challenges and promote inclusive development.

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, disclosed this during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, as part of the ongoing account of stewardship by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s cabinet.

Mr. George said the interventions covered areas such as the transportation subsidy allowance rolled out following the removal of fuel subsidy, as well as the Ounje Eko food subsidy programme, which provided low-cost food items to vulnerable households.

“Our administration remains committed to balanced and sustainable growth,” he said, adding that the 2024 budget recorded an 87% performance rate.
“We also conducted a non-expenditure framework review to ensure equitable and impact-driven resource allocation.”

The Commissioner highlighted that Lagos State’s total revenue rose from N2.08 trillion in 2024 to a projected N2.968 trillion in 2025, reflecting the government’s drive toward increased internally generated revenue and efficient fiscal management.

Providing a breakdown of the 2025 budget of N3.366 trillion, he stated that:

Total revenue projection: N2.968 trillion

Recurrent expenditure: N1.295 trillion

Capital expenditure: N2.071 trillion

On job creation, Mr. George revealed that through the Resilience Office, the ministry facilitated the creation of 100 direct green jobs and 1,500 indirect green jobs, while supporting over 5,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through climate-resilient and circular business models.

The Commissioner reaffirmed that the Sanwo-Olu administration would continue to focus on infrastructure expansion, social safety nets, and inclusive economic growth to improve the quality of life for all Lagosians.
