Lagos, NEMA Set to Host National SEMA Conference 2025

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will host the National SEMA Conference 2025 from October 2nd to 4th in Lagos.

Speaking at a news conference held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the conference will be held under the theme “Strengthening Sub-National Emergency Management for a Resilient Nigeria.”

The three-day programme will bring together emergency managers, policymakers, development partners, security institutions, private sector leaders, and civil society representatives from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the schedule, the opening ceremony and high-level dialogue will take place on October 2nd at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Maryland, Lagos. Technical sessions and keynote addresses will highlight the first day. On October 3rd and 4th, participants will move to the Lagos State Emergency and Relief/Rescue Camp, Igando, for a live simulation exercise to demonstrate coordinated multi-agency response to complex disaster scenarios.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu assured Lagos residents of the state’s preparedness, urging them to remain calm during emergencies. He emphasized that Lagos has the capacity for prompt response within the golden hour, thanks to its well-equipped systems and trained personnel.

Lagos was selected as host due to its pioneering role in emergency management. Between 2008 and 2025, the state managed over 13,700 incidents, including fires, road accidents, structural collapses, hazardous material cases, medical emergencies, and large-scale disasters. More than 1,450 emergencies were handled in just the first eight months of 2025, while over 3,000 casualties received attention in 2023 alone.

These achievements, the Permanent Secretary noted, reflect Lagos’ commitment to resilience through technology, training, and collaboration with NEMA, alongside community-focused interventions.
