Lagos Opens 61 Roads, 5 Bridges in 1 Year; Delivers 78km in inner-city repairs, attracts $22m FDI for fibre expansion

In a bold push to enhance urban connectivity and accelerate infrastructure renewal, the Lagos State Government has delivered 61 new roads spanning 56.52km and five bridges in the past year, while ramping up work on 147 ongoing road and bridge projects across the state.

Speaking on Monday at a ministerial press briefing commemorating the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth, despite prevailing economic headwinds.

In his words: “Since the inception of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Obafemi Hamzat-led administration, the THEMES+ Agenda has served as a transformative blueprint. Under the ‘T’ pillar for Traffic Management and Transportation, we’ve made significant strides in improving road connectivity and elevating infrastructure delivery standards.”

Key Road and Bridge Projects Delivered

Daramola highlighted numerous completed projects, including:

Reconstruction of the pedestrian bridge at Estate Gate, Alapere, Ketu

Abiola-Onijemo Link Road with Bridge, Ifako-Ijaiye LGA

Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Macpherson Avenue, and Femi Okunnu Road in Ikoyi

Ilu, Inupa, and Ilabere roads in Victoria Island

Babafemi Dada network of roads and bridge in Alimosho

In Ikeja, several streets in GRA, including Oba Dosumu, Sobo Arobiodu, Oduduwa Way and Crescent, and Sasegbon, have been rehabilitated. Other upgrades include St. Finbarr’s College Road, Iwaya Road, Sand Zero Street, and extensive works in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos Mainland, Somolu, and Kosofe LGAs.

Major Projects Awaiting Commissioning

Daramola revealed that several strategic roads are completed and awaiting commissioning, including:

Aradagun-Mosafejo-Ilado-Imeke Road and Samuel Ekundayo Road, Badagry

Abaranje Road, Magbon-Alade Township Roads, Ibeju-Lekki

Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road (Dopemu Road)

Sand Zero Road, Oyingbo

Arowojobe Link Bridge, Mende, Maryland

Ongoing Flagship Projects

Among the iconic ongoing projects are:

Ojota–Opebi Link Bridge, a strategic connector through swampy terrain

Eti-Osa–Lekki–Epe Expressway, a 47.88km concrete corridor from Abraham Adesanya to Epe

Omu Creek Bridge, linking Sangotedo to the proposed Lagoon Highway

Lagos-Badagry Expressway Upgrade – expanded from 4 to 10 lanes, including BRT corridors and a central light rail track

Other transformative works include the Lekki Regional Road Extension, 7th Axial Road, Ikotun Flyover, and Ajara–Agelasho–Ikoga Road Network.

Expanding Fibre Infrastructure and Attracting FDI

On digital infrastructure, the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) has driven significant progress. An additional 2,700km of fibre duct installations are planned, building on 3,000km already completed. Notably, the state has secured $22 million in foreign direct investment for high-quality fibre deployment.

Routine Maintenance and Major Interventions

Between May 2023 and May 2024, the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) intervened on 1,177 inner roads, covering 78.42km. The interventions ranged from pothole patching and sectional overlays to full-scale reconstruction of strategic roads.

Unity/Osebaby/Umunya Streets, Okota

Ladoke Akintola Street, GRA Ikeja

Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road, Agege

Odofin–Igbogbo Baiyeku Road, Ikorodu (ongoing)

Challenges and Outlook

Daramola acknowledged challenges such as Lagos’ low-lying terrain, flooding, infrastructure vandalism, and rising construction costs. However, he maintained that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains steadfast in its mission to deliver life-transforming infrastructure.

“Our investment in roads and bridges is not just about movement. It’s about unlocking economic growth, boosting regional competitiveness, and preparing Lagos for the future,” he said.

He reiterated the Governor’s pledge to complete all ongoing projects within his tenure and continue building a smart, resilient, and inclusive megacity.
