In its determination to improve the water transportation system in Lagos State, the State government is partnering with the French government to introduce electric ferries. .
The Head of Operations, Lagos State Waterways Authority, Laswa, Mr Ibrahim Famuyiwa, made the development known while featuring on dateline Lagos, a Radio one audience participatory programme.
Mr Famuyiwa said fifteen out of the twenty local governments in the state can be accessed via waterways hereby prompting the government to provide over forty jetties to provide more avenues for water travel,
He hinted that installation of electric charging points will be made available at the jetties to ensure the smooth operations of the electric ferries.
While decrying the decline in passengers owing to increase in fare, the LASWA head of operations noted that plans are underway to also introduce CNG ferries to bring down the price of commuting on the waterways.
Mr Famuyiws who added that adequate measures such as surveillance cameras, data navigation centres, and water guards have been put in place to ensure safety and security at LAGOS waterways advised passengers to wear their life jackets appropriately whenever they are travelling by water to prevent accidents on waterways.
