The Lagos State Government has disbursed over ₦8 billion to retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme and Defined Benefit Scheme, while also expanding welfare packages, housing support and loan facilities for serving public servants across the state.
Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, disclosed this on Monday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, to commemorate the seventh year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
Agoro said a total of ₦8,042,264,264.91 was paid to retirees as part of the administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and strengthening pension administration in the state public service.
He described the public service as the engine room of governance and commended workers for their dedication, professionalism and resilience in sustaining effective service delivery across Lagos.
According to him, the Office of the Head of Service recorded significant achievements in pension management, staff welfare, housing support, innovation, procurement reforms and workforce development during the review period.
Agoro disclosed that 4,837 newly recruited officers were uploaded into the state’s Soft Suite database and deployed across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, while 38 political appointees were also integrated into the system.
He added that Governor Sanwo-Olu approved the appointment of 25 substantive directors on Grade Level 17 as Permanent Secretaries and Tutors-General within the Lagos State Public Service.
On workers’ welfare, Agoro revealed that the state government paid a ₦50,000 palliative to public servants in May 2026 and also approved a ₦32,000 monthly pension increment for pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme.
He said the administration also sustained its annual health screening programme tagged “Public Servants, Know Your Numbers” to encourage regular health checks among workers.
The Head of Service further disclosed that 750 officers were honoured during the 16th Lagos State Long Service Merit Award for spending over 30 years in service, including six Permanent Secretaries and 744 officers across various cadres.
He added that during the Public Service Week celebration, 177 outstanding officers received plaques and cash rewards, while five senior officers were presented with brand new cars.
According to him, five junior officers also received ₦5 million each through a transparent ballot process, while Governor Sanwo-Olu approved additional cash rewards totalling ₦130.5 million for outstanding workers.
Agoro said the government also intensified support for retirees through quarterly training, skills acquisition programmes, health screenings and post-service engagement initiatives.
On housing support, he revealed that the Staff Housing and Loans Board disbursed ₦1.59 billion in housing loans to 2,033 beneficiaries during the review period.
He added that the governor approved a ₦1 billion yearly car refurbishment loan scheme for public servants, with 422 officers benefiting from the initiative.
The Head of Service also disclosed that public servants would benefit from the allocation of newly constructed two and three-bedroom flats at Isale-Gangan on Lagos Island.
Agoro further highlighted reforms by the Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation, which helped Lagos achieve an 85.6 per cent score in the 2025 Subnational Ease of Doing Business Report.
According to him, Lagos emerged as the Best Subnational for Ease of Doing Business in 2025, while the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation was recognised as the Best State Reform Champion.
He added that the office trained over 876 officers under its Growth Mindset advocacy initiative and onboarded 37 Creativity and Innovation Ambassadors across MDAs to deepen reforms within the public service.
Agoro also disclosed that the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency processed 6,590 approval requests through its e-procurement platform and inspected 252 capital projects across the state within the review period.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration to improving workers’ welfare, strengthening institutional reforms and sustaining efficient public service delivery in Lagos State.
