The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Owohunwa Jimoh, has met with leaders of fifteen civil society organizations (CSOs) ahead of the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations and a proposed protest slated for June 12. The meeting, held at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, focused on ensuring peaceful and coordinated public activities across the state during the national observance.
The dialogue between the Police Command and CSO representatives was described as open and constructive. It was agreed that while some organizations will participate in Democracy Day celebrations, others intend to stage peaceful protests. All protesting groups committed to assembling under the Ikeja Under-Bridge before proceeding together to Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota—the only location approved for demonstrations.
CP Jimoh emphasized the need to uphold public safety, warning against any disruption of peace, obstruction of traffic, or activities that could be hijacked by miscreants. He reiterated the Command’s readiness to provide security for both celebrants and protesters, provided all actions remain lawful and orderly.
The CSOs pledged to uphold the resolutions reached during the meeting and to inform other organizations not in attendance to ensure consistency and coordination. They further assured police authorities that the protest would not be used as a platform for violence or incitement.
Among the civil society representatives present were leaders from Access to Advocacy & Rights of People, Center for Indigene Government Group, Ideal Society Advocacy Groups, Human Right Monitor, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Rights Kline, Community Development Group, and Initiatives for Development and Advocacy, among others.
The Police Command urged Lagos residents to go about their daily activities and Democracy Day celebrations without fear, while remaining law-abiding and vigilant. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via the Command’s emergency lines: 08063299264 and 08065154338.
The Commissioner commended the CSOs for their cooperation and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and public order during and beyond the Democracy Day events.
