The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has commenced a controlled demolition exercise at the fire-affected building on Martins Street, Lagos Island.

The operation follows a thorough structural assessment and is being conducted in strict accordance with international best practices for urban safety, disaster risk management, and public health protection.

A statement by the Permanent Secretary LASEMA Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu says in the interest of public safety, the Lagos State Government hereby advises all traders, customers, residents, and members of the public to observe the safety protocols put in place for the duration of the exercise.

Dr Oke-Osanyintolu said the affected building and its immediate surroundings have been designated a restricted and hazardous area noting that no unauthorized person should enter the premises under any circumstance.

He urged Market traders and customers to maintain a safe distance from the building at all times to prevent injuries that may arise from falling debris or potential structural collapse.

According to the statement, all forms of trading, parking, loading, and other commercial activities within the immediate vicinity of the building are to be suspended until the area is formally declared safe by the appropriate authorities.

“To ensure public safety, the site has been adequately barricaded with warning signs conspicuously displayed. Security personnel have also been deployed to prevent unauthorized access and to manage the flow of people within the area”

“The demolition company engaged for this exercise is required to carry out a comprehensive structural assessment prior to demolition and to execute all activities in full compliance with established safety regulations. The site will remain properly cordoned off throughout the operation, with dust control measures and effective traffic and pedestrian management plans in place”

“All personnel on site must wear the prescribed Personal Protective Equipment, and operators of heavy machinery are mandated to ensure that all equipment is in good working condition before use. Emergency response arrangements, including the Lagos State Fire Service, LASAMBUS, and first aid facilities, will be readily available throughout the exercise”

The demolition team will also maintain close coordination with the LABSCA , Nigeria Police Force, LASEMA, LASTMA, Fire service , LASAMBUS , Neighborhood Service and other relevant emergency and regulatory agencies to ensure adequate security, effective crowd control, and overall public safety. In addition, continuous public sensitization will be carried out to discourage residents, traders, and onlookers from gathering around the demolition site until the operation is completed and the area is certified safe.

The Lagos State Government recognizes the economic importance of Martins Street to the Lagos Island business community. These precautionary measures are, however, necessary to safeguard lives and property, and to ensure that the demolition is carried out in a safe, orderly, and professional manner.

The LASEMA Boss enjoined members of the public to cooperate fully with security and emergency personnel on ground. Any safety concerns should be reported immediately to the nearest LASEMA Response Unit or through the Lagos State Emergency Toll-Free Lines: 112 and 767.

The state government appreciates the patience, understanding, and cooperation of the Martins Street host community as we work together to restore safety and normalcy to the area.
