Lagos State Government Pledges Support for Cooperative Societies

The Lagos State government has given the assurance that it will continue to support the growth of Cooperative societies in the state so as to complement its efforts at improving the welfare of the people and eradicating poverty .

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance at the grand finale of the Lagos State Cooperative Federation, LASCOFED, Cooperative Festival, held at Agidingbi, Ikeja.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamza, Governor Sanwo-Olu said with adequate support from the government,  the Cooperative Societies would continue to thrive, raise the socio-economic status of their members and create more employment opportunities in the state.

He commended the Cooperative Societies for the critical roles they have been playing in supporting their members to be productive and financially self-reliant.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said this explained  why Lagos State Government had shown keen interest in the affairs of Cooperative societies in the state with a view to providing them with the necessary  support needed to improve their relevance and effectiveness.

The Governor however,  appealed to Members of the Cooperative societies to vote for candidates of the All Progressive Congress, APC, vying for different political offices in the forthcoming elections.

In a goodwill message, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mr. Abiola Olowu advised the Cooperative Societies to strengthen their Movement more than ever  before so that the people could take advantage of the opportunities available in the Cooperative societies to weather through the current socio-economic challenges in the country.

He stressed that a strong Movement of Cooperative Societies would also bring all the relevant stakeholders together with the aim of harnessing their resources to tap into various investment opportunities in agro-processing, leather and textiles, which were areas of interest to the Lagos State government.

He therefore, urged the Cooperative Societies to develop a sound Corporate governance and policy framework that would clearly stipulates the roles of their members, delegates, the board, staff and other stakeholders.

The highlight of the event was a tour round the exhibition stand put together by the  Lagos State Cooperative Federation, LASCOFED.

The tour was led by the Deputy Governor,  Dr. Obafemi Hamza.
