Lagos State Government solicits Support of Structural Engineers in Tackling Building Collapse

The Lagos State Government has charged Structural Engineers in the country to support the state government in carrying out Structural tests especially on high rise buildings in the State to address the problem of building Collpse in the metropolis.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Olusola Sanwo-olu gave the charge at the 2021 Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers held at Ikeja, Lagos.

Represented by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-olu said that the government would appreciate the professional inpute of Structural engineers in addressing the incidents of building collapse in Lagos State which had led to loss of lives and property.

In an address, the President, Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers, Engineer Kehinde Osifala gave the assurance that its institution was ready to partner and collaborate with stakeholders to bring about a reduction in the Structural and Building Collpse in the country especially in Lagos State.

He noted that the state of building collapse in the country particularly in Lagos State had become embarrassing and worrisome to professional engineers and as such there was need to partner with relevant stakeholders to address the ugly trend in the country.

Speaking on the recent twenty one strorey building that Collapsed on Gerrald road Ikoyi, Lagos, Engineer Osifala said that already his institution had submitted its preliminary report on the building collapse to the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN to know the problems that contributed to the collapse of the building with the aim of forestalling future occurence.

He stressed that the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers had also submitted its memorandum on the collapsed building to the Lagos State Panel of Enquiry on the Collapse of the twenty one strorey building to guide the panel in its enquiry.

Delivering a lecture at the event, the immediate past president of The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers, Engineer Edward Atumonyo advised his fellow engineers to embrace the new technology in the world of Structural engineering in order to be relevant in the modern world of engineering practice and to improve on their professional delivery.

The highlight of the Progranmme was the presentation of an honourable award to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu.

The award was recieved by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat who represented the Governor at the event .
