Lagos State Government Steps up Intervention to address egg glut amongst Poultry Farmers

The Lagos State Government has facilitated the offtake of 300,000 eggs from the Erikorodo Poultry Estate in Ikorodu after weeks of visits and negotiations between poultry farmers and a private firm.

The offtake of the eggs was facilitated by the Commissioner for agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya and other senior officials in the Ministry as part of efforts to address the egg glut in the sector in line with the food security agenda of the State Government.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry, Mrs Nike Sodipo, the operations commenced on Monday, 10th April 2023.

Poultry farmers operating within Erikorodo and Aiyedoto poultry estates form a large percentage of registered farmers under the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) – Lagos State Chapter.

The poultry farmers attributed the cause of the egg glut to the cash crunch, closure of schools, amongst other factors.

In her response, the Commissioner for Agriculture stated that “on our part as government, the administration of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will continue to put measures in place to create a conducive environment for farmers to operate in line with efforts to ensure sufficiency in food production in the State”.
