The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to inclusive governance and civic participation that would deepen collaboration between the state and local councils.
This was emphasized during a stakeholders’ engagement with Local Government and LCDA Chairmen held in Ikeja, with the theme, “Empowering Voices, Shaping Policies.”
Special Adviser to the Governor, Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Tajudeen Afolabi, said the dialogue was designed to strengthen intergovernmental relations and address overlapping mandates that often lead to multiple taxation.
According to him, “It is not just another meeting; it is a conversation, a platform for active engagement, and a reaffirmation of our commitment to building a government that listens, learns, and connects directly with its people.”
He explained that the theme of the event—“Empowering Voices and Shaping Policies: Strengthening the Synergy between the State and Local Government for Improved Service Delivery”—reflects the government’s belief that “true governance thrives only when citizens are not passive observers but active participants in the decision-making process, especially at the grassroots.”
He added, “Listening to the people is crucial to delivering on the social contract and to achieving the Lagos of our dreams.”

Dr. Afolabi also appealed to youths to promote peace as the next general election draws near, urging them to reject being used for violence.
“By next year, another election campaign will commence. Youths, do not allow yourselves to be used as instruments of destruction during elections. Many politicians who give you money to snatch ballot boxes have their children abroad. Think twice and be good ambassadors of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole,” he warned.
Stakeholders at the meeting raised concerns over multiple taxation, activities of motor park touts known as Agberos, indiscriminate refuse dumping, and security challenges posed by scavengers.
Responding, representatives from the Lagos Inland Revenue Service (LIRS) explained ongoing efforts to curb multiple taxation, while the Ministry of Transportation announced that the unification of commercial buses—beginning November 17 along the Lekki-Epe Expressway—would help eliminate touting in motor parks.
Permanent Secretary, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, urged residents to utilize the Citizens Gate platform to make complaints and offer feedback directly to relevant government agencies.
“It is through consistent interaction like this that we can identify challenges, align priorities, and co-create solutions that advance our shared vision of a Greater Lagos,” she said, encouraging participants to “see this forum as a safe place to speak freely, share ideas, and propose workable strategies that can deepen civic participation across all levels of governance.”
