LASEMA To Honour First Responders On International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, says it will be giving out special award of recognition to key stakeholders as part of activities commemorating this year’s
International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The Director General of LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, made this known at a news conference ahead of the day at Alausa.

Dr Oke-Osanyintolu said the special award which would be given to the best performing staff in each of the State’s first responder Agencies, is to motivate those dedicated to duty and spur others to more action.

“They’ve been doing a lot, they performed very well during the ebola pandemic and even now during the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, our first responders are always on the ground during major emergencies, the Safety Commission is doing a lot, the Lagos Fire Service, which is now an agency, they are always on the ground during all odds, that is one of the reasons we want to celebrate our first responders, we will be choosing one individual in each of the First Responder agencies” Dr Oke-Osanyintolu explained.

While reiterating that emergencies in Lagos have greatly reduced due to continuous sensitization of residents, the LASEMA Boss advised residents to adhere to tips given by the agency to prevent disasters.

Reeling out some of the achievements of the Agency, Dr Oke-Osanyintolu noted that one thousand, three hundred and seventy emergencies were recorded in the last one year compared to previous years of over ten thousand emergencies within one year.

He also appreciated the efforts of the wife of the Governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-olu on the local Emergency Committee Initiative and Early Warning Units which he said had improved response time to ten minutes from thirty minutes.

We will also be recognizing the efforts of the First Lady, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Oluremi Hamzat”

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction which will be observed on Wednesday this week has as its theme;
International Cooperation for Developing Countries to reduce their disaster risk and disaster losses.
