The Lagos State Government provided free eye screening and eyeglasses to members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Lagos.
The exercise, took place at the NUJ Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday in commemoration of 2023 World Sight Day,

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, who was at the NUJ Secretariat to see things for himself, said the exercise was to support residents of Lagos State as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

“We usually embark on this outreach all year round. As part of our efforts to mark 2023 World Sight Day, we have targeted some groups of people, which is why We decided to enlist journalists on our schedule because their sight plays a major role in discharging their duties professionally,” Ogboye said.
The permanent secretary disclosed that the eye screening would be extended to other places in Lagos, not forgetting the Lagos Council of the NUJ.
Ogboye tasked journalists with the need to embark on regular eye check-ups to get the necessary care.
Meanwhile, the Director of Medical Administration and Training, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olufunmilayo Shokunbi, noted that the level of productivity at the workplace depends on the quality of the person’s sight.
“When working on your laptops, endeavor to look up or gaze at something for 20 seconds to reduce the pressure on the eyes,” she said.
Dr. Shokunbi urged attendees to prevent, protect, and preserve their eyesight to enjoy its benefits.
Mr. Adeleye Ajayi, the Chairman of Lagos NUJ, expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for their kind gesture after he also benefited from the exercise.
He urged journalists to seize the opportunity to have their eyes checked at no cost.

Mrs.Julie Ekong, Chairman of the Health Committee, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), lauded the efforts of the Ministry for professionalism and gallantry.
She urged members who couldn’t make the exercise to be on the lookout for the second batch soon.
The outing had an impressive turnout, as over 120 journalists benefited from the scheme for various eye conditions.
