LaSG Engage Community on Proposed Burial Site Along Babs Animashaun Street

The Lagos State Government has held a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss the proposed establishment of a cemetery along Babs Animashaun Street in Surulere, a locality currently without a designated public burial ground.

The engagement, led by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive urban planning.

Dr. Olumide explained that the initiative aims to equitably distribute essential infrastructure, including final resting places, across all local government areas.

He acknowledged the challenges of a growing population within a limited land space, stating that the proposed location is permissible under planning regulations and aligns with international best practices for dense urban centers.

“Lagos is growing exponentially within a defined land space and requires creativity and collective effort to address its planning needs,” Dr. Olumide said, urging stakeholders to give the project a chance for the benefit of the entire community.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Physical Planning, Engr. Oluwole Sotire, said the forum was designed to promote dialogue and achieve mutual understanding.

He confirmed that the project proponents, Legacy Gardens, had revised their proposal to address residents’ initial concerns, particularly regarding potential groundwater contamination, safety, and security.
