The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified enforcement operations in Alimosho area of Lagos, leading to arrests and the sealing of properties over environmental violations.
The crackdown, carried out by LAWMA’s Project W.I.S.E (West) team, targeted illegal waste disposal and dumping, particularly around the Ikotun axis and nearby communities.
According to the agency, a 15-year-old boy was arrested during a night operation for dumping refuse at the Ikotun-Egbe roundabout.
He has since been handed over to authorities for further action.Officials also sealed a car lot at Iroko Estate along LASU-Isheri Road and a furniture showroom for discharging waste into drainage systems.
In another case, a mini store at Diamond Estate was issued a notice for failing to use a registered waste operator.
The enforcement followed complaints from residents about an undeveloped plot being used as an illegal dumpsite, where waste was reportedly burned.
The property was sealed and a security guard arrested for alleged involvement.
LAWMA’s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, warned that illegal dumping, open burning of waste and use of unregistered waste collectors remain offences under Lagos environmental laws.
He urged residents to comply with regulations by using accredited operators and reporting violations, adding that the agency would continue to strengthen enforcement to ensure a cleaner and safer Lagos.
