LAWMA Credits Inter-Agency Collaboration for Lagos Sanitation Exercise Success

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has attributed the success of last Saturday’s statewide environmental sanitation exercise to effective inter-agency collaboration, strategic planning, and strong public participation across Lagos State.

In a statement released by its Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, the agency explained that coordinated efforts between LAWMA, Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators, local government councils, and enforcement agencies ensured extensive coverage and operational efficiency during the exercise.

According to LAWMA, early planning played a critical role in the outcome, including the deployment of waste collection trucks, personnel, and equipment, as well as the optimisation of landfill sites and Transfer Loading Stations to support smooth operations.

The Authority also highlighted the impact of sustained public sensitisation campaigns and grassroots mobilisation led by local councils and community leaders, which significantly improved compliance levels.

Targeted clean-up operations in markets, highways, blackspots, and residential communities further enhanced environmental outcomes across the state.

Addressing reports of uncollected waste in some locations, LAWMA clarified that waste evacuation is a structured and phased process rather than an immediate activity completed during the sanitation window.

It explained that the volume of waste generated statewide required systematic evacuation based on logistics planning and operational scheduling.

The agency confirmed that PSP operators were fully mobilised immediately after the exercise and that waste evacuation is currently ongoing across all local government areas in Lagos State.

LAWMA also stressed its commitment to safe and regulated waste disposal at approved facilities, noting that indiscriminate or rushed clearance is not part of its operational standards.

Responding to claims circulating on social media alleging non-evacuation, the Authority described them as misleading, insisting that field reports confirm prompt commencement of evacuation activities, which are being closely monitored.

Reaffirming its commitment, LAWMA assured residents of continued efforts to sustain the gains of the sanitation exercise through consistent evacuation, stronger enforcement, and ongoing public engagement, while urging residents to maintain proper waste disposal practices across the state.
