Residents of FESTAC Town in Lagos State have commended the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for delivering improved waste collection services in the area.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, residents noted that LAWMA’s consistent operations have significantly reduced indiscriminate dumping and environmental pollution.
They said the agency now collects waste regularly, mostly on Thursdays and sometimes on Sundays.
Before LAWMA’s intervention, many households relied on informal waste collectors, popularly known as Abokis, who charged higher fees and provided irregular services.
Mrs. Grace Momodu, a resident of 5th Avenue, said LAWMA’s ₦1,000 monthly charge is cheaper than what informal carriers demand, sometimes as high as ₦1,000 per pick-up.
Similarly, Mrs. Eniola Omotola of 22 Road noted that LAWMA’s fixed rates and efficiency make it a better option than the Abokis, who have limitations on the volume of waste they can carry.
Mr. Emmanuel James highlighted LAWMA’s wider coverage and reliability, while Ms. Blessed-Gift Nwaruh acknowledged the agency’s improved timeliness, stressing the need for further efforts to restore FESTAC to its former cleanliness.
