The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has urged residents of Lagos to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, stressing that proper waste handling is fundamental to building a cleaner, more liveable, and sustainable city.
Dr. Gbadegesin made the call while speaking on a flagship programme, where he addressed the realities of managing waste in a rapidly urbanising мегacity and emphasised the shared responsibility of government and residents in keeping Lagos clean.
He noted that LAWMA continues to sustain waste evacuation and management operations across the state, while also strengthening routine collection services and intensifying the clearance of identified waste flashpoints.
According to him, these flashpoints often result from indiscriminate dumping and poor waste handling practices that undermine progress in the sector.
The LAWMA boss further highlighted the authority’s increasing focus on recycling, stating that waste should no longer be viewed solely as refuse, but as a valuable economic resource.
He added that expanded recycling initiatives would create employment opportunities, stimulate private sector participation, and enhance environmental protection across the state.
