Local Flights to Resume Soon at Upgraded Ibadan Airport

Local flight operations are expected to resume at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, before the end of 2025, following significant upgrades currently underway.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, in Ibadan.

Oyelade explained that the airport is undergoing a major transformation aimed at meeting international standards, with full-scale international operations projected to begin in 2026.

According to the commissioner, key components of the upgrade include the extension of the airport’s runway from 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres and an expansion in width from 45 metres to 60 metres. These improvements will enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft suitable for international travel.

He further stated that the airfield lighting system has been upgraded to CAT C standards, and firefighting and emergency response capabilities have also been enhanced to boost overall safety.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, facilities for customs, immigration, and other essential agencies are being installed to align with global aviation standards.

Oyelade noted that construction on the runway, taxiway, apron, and blast pads has reached 55% completion. He added that the remaining work is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, paving the way for the return of local flights—pending regulatory approval.
