Medical Experts Advise Nigerians to go for Regular Eye Check

There is the need for members of the public to go for regular eye check to ascertain their status with a view to seeking early intervention to prevent blindness.

The President of the Nigerian Optometrist Association, Dr Obinna Awiaka gave the advice at a news briefing heralding activities for this year’s Women Optometrist in Nigeria held at Ikeja Lagos.

Dr. Awiaka explained that knowing the condition of the eyes would go a long way in preventing some eye disorders that have no symptoms.

According to him, the association is resolute in tackling quackery and other vices that contribute to the rate of avoidable blindness and visual impairment in the country

Dr. Awiaka called on government to provide special salary structure for Optometrists.

In her goodwill message, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria, Professor Ebele Bridget Uzodike said, to provide access to eyes care services for those in need at the grassroots, it is imperative that facilities be brought to remote areas where professionals are lacking.

Professor Uzodike said the action would reduce pressure on people traveling far distances to seek medical attention

In her welcome address, the President of Women Optometrists in Nigeria, Dr Ogechi Nwokedi said, the programme was organised to enhance potentials and reduce stress while carrying out roles as professional women.

They will also learn, share knowledge, support and take charge of their physical and mental health as well as equip themselves with those qualities that will make them propel to success.

She said that women optometrists in Nigeria are volunteers and an affliction of the Nigerian Optometric Association by some female optometrist who recognize the need for eyes care for the underserved population, particularly women and children, to ensure those who live in remote areas receive treatment.

Speaking on this year’s theme ” The Empowered woman, The woman, the Brand”, Dr. Yetunde Adeshina described every woman is someone who is smart, strong, and capable of handling situations.

To this end, it is crucial for women to build their personal and professional brands in order to stand out.

She urged them not to allow anything to hinder them from being what they wanted to be.
