MFM Queens Recover, Keep Semifinal Hopes Alive in League

Defending champions MFM rebounded from their opening day defeat to thrash Nigeria Customs 78-52 points today in a Zenith Bank/NBBF Women’s Basketball League game played in Lagos.

Despite leading with more than 15 points against Dolphins Women Basketball team in their Final 8 opener, the reigning queens succumbed to several onslaught from their opponents, losing the game 51-41 points at the Indoor Sports Hall of National Stadium in Surulere.

According to MFM coach, Ochuko Owolabi, the loss against Dolphins was a wake-up call for the team and was happy that they responded with the win against Customs.

She insisted they must get their acts together when they take on The Titans in their final group game on Thursday 18 September 2025 to secure their place in the last four.

Elsewhere in the first game of the day, Bayelsa Blue Whales earned their first win of the finals, beating Air Warriors 65-47 points to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the semifinals.

Both Air Warriors and Nigeria Customs are on the verge of elimination after losing two games in the series.

Bayelsa Blue Whales’ coach Tony Nelson told journalists there was hope for his ladies as they have already won a game and all they needed to do was to win their final game to progress to the semifinal where anything can happen.

Dolphins also put their feet almost in the last four after securing another victory in the finals, defeating Titans 63-39 points.

Meanwhile, the teams have applauded the sponsor of the league, Zenith Bank, for raising prize monies for this year’s finals.

The sponsors had announced a new prize money of N7.5m for the winner while the second and third runners up will go home with N5m and N3m respectively.
