MMIA Lagos: Cannabis Cache Concealed in Boxing Kits Leads to Trafficker’s Arrest

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos intercepted a surprising New Year’s delivery: a consignment of Colorado cannabis, a potent strain, cleverly concealed within boxing kits imported from the United States.

Following a week-long intelligence operation, the agency successfully tracked and arrested 38-year-old Olorunfunmi Saheed Olakunle on Saturday, January 6th. Olakunle is suspected of distributing the dangerous psychoactive substance to dealers across Lagos state.

According to NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the shipment arrived in Lagos on Monday, January 1st, via Cairo on an Egypt Airlines flight, disguised as boxing equipment. Olakunle confessed to receiving similar packages from his childhood friend, US-based Sagir Salami, and delivering them to various recipients. This latest shipment weighed in at a hefty 1.80 kilograms.

This is not the only notable bust for the NDLEA in their new year interdiction operations. In Kaduna, 28-year-old Bilkisu Suleman, suspected of supplying ammunition to bandits, topped the list of twelve arrests. Officers on patrol along the Zaria-Kano expressway apprehended Suleman on Wednesday, January 3rd, finding 249 rounds of 7.62 mm live ammunition cleverly hidden in a black nylon bag inside her handbag.

Suleman, reportedly on her way to deliver the ammunition to a bandit in Kakumi village, Katsina state, was transferred to the Kaduna state command of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

In an earlier operation near the gate of the Bonny Camp military cantonment in Victoria Island on December 12th, 2023, NDLEA officers intercepted 37-year-old Francis Suru and a staggering 63 jumbo bags of Ghana Loud, another cannabis strain, weighing a total of 2,104.2 kilograms, along with a truck.

Notably, armed escorts attempted to disrupt the operation with sporadic shooting, prompting soldiers from the cantonment to intervene and ultimately hand over the suspect and drug exhibits to the NDLEA.
