The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cleared Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, producers of BON Bread, following an investigation into claims that the bread remained unspoiled for over two months.
In a press release issued on May 17, 2026, the agency said its investigation confirmed that the company complied with food safety regulations and did not violate any standards regarding preservatives or shelf-life extension practices.
The controversy began on April 13, 2026, after a social media user alleged that a loaf of bread supplied for sale had stayed fresh for more than two months without developing mold.
Although the complainant did not mention the brand involved, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited identified the bread as BON Bread and denied any wrongdoing.
NAFDAC said it immediately launched an investigation to provide the public with “evidence-based scientific proof” concerning the allegation.
According to the agency, officials from its Greater FCT Directorate conducted an inspection of the company’s bakery facility in Abuja on April 20, 2026.
Bread samples and condiments were collected from the production facility, while additional samples were purchased from the open market for laboratory analysis.
The agency disclosed that laboratory findings showed calcium propionate was used as a preservative in the bread and that the quantity used fell within the acceptable limits specified by the Codex Alimentarius Food Code.
NAFDAC further stated that tests carried out on three sets of BON Bread samples obtained from both the factory and open market were satisfactory.
The analysis also revealed that the bread did not contain objectionable substances, including bromate and non-nutritive sweeteners.
The agency explained that bread manufacturers are permitted to adopt preservation practices that extend shelf life, provided such methods comply with internationally approved food safety standards.
NAFDAC noted that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, which began operations in 2006, has consistently renewed its product licenses without penalties or product recalls.
The agency therefore assured the public that the company remains in compliance with its regulations and urged consumers to channel complaints through official NAFDAC offices or electronic platforms before taking issues to social media.
NAFDAC added that using official complaint channels would ensure proper and discreet investigation of concerns relating to regulated products.
