Nigeria Advances Aviation Safety as Kano, Port Harcourt Airports Get Certification

In a major boost for Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has secured Aerodrome Certificates for Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport and the Obafemi Awolowo International Airport in Port Harcourt.

The certificates, formally issued by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, mark a significant step in aligning the nation’s airports with global safety and operational standards.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, described the development as clear evidence of the authority’s commitment to world-class aviation safety.

She said the certification followed a rigorous process of inspections, technical audits and continuous engagement with the regulator, stressing that it was earned, not routine.

Mrs. Kuku praised the close collaboration between FAAN and the NCAA, noting that the regulator’s guidance ensured full compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization requirements.

She said the partnership strengthens confidence in Nigeria’s airports and reassures both airlines and passengers of their safety and reliability.

While acknowledging that some corrective actions are still being finalized, the FAAN boss assured that dedicated teams are already working to address them promptly.

She emphasized that continuous improvement remains central to FAAN’s operations.

The certification of the Kano and Port Harcourt airports is expected to further enhance Nigeria’s standing in the global aviation community, reinforcing the country’s commitment to safe, efficient and internationally compliant air transport.
