Nigeria Aviation industry set to reduce Global Carbon Emissions

The Nigeria Aviation Industry is starting a program called the Fly-2-Green Nigeria as part of its contribution to reducing global carbon emission.

The Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Captain Musa Nuhu disclosed this in a special presentation at the just concluded African-Indian Ocean Aviation Conference in Abuja with the Theme: ‘Green Flight to Eco-System Conservation in Nigeria, Mobilizing Market-Based Measures for Sustainable Aviation in Nigeria Fly-2-Green Nigeria Program’.

According to him,the United Nations research on Climate Change report had revealed that the African continent responsible for less than 3% of global emissions will bear the brunt of over 60% of global Green-House Emissions effects.

And this he said, would leave the continent exposed to a myriad of socio-economic, environmental, security and humanitarian challenges from desertification, the dying Lake Chad and Blue Bio-diversity losses with Pan-African wetlands and ocean shorelines.

He stated that Nigeria is home to a host of climate change challenges, most of all bio-diversity degradation and pollution and holds the record for the African country with the highest deforestation rate.

Captain Nuhu therefore emphasized that, with this development, it is urgent now to mobilize a common but differentiated Sustainable Aviation Solution for Nigeria that is designed specifically to ensure Bio-Diversity conservation and restoration across communities.

“The time for Africa to put a “Green Foot forward” is now, and this can be achieved through climate smart Sustainable Aviation Solutions that meet the aspirations, ambitions and emerging opportunities for operators, regulators, travel consumers and the planet”.

To this end, he said the industry is introducing a number of programs to help tackle climate change challenges under the label Green-Sky- Green, for consumers, operators, policy synergy, policy partners, value proposition among others.

The program, according to him, is engineered to launch the first Green Aviation Marketplace program in Africa and promote progressive possibilities that profit the people and the planet through climate smart ESG efficient programs that guarantee Green and Blue Economic Growth for the United Nations Global Green Goals Agenda.

The NCAA boss also explained that it is a Voluntary Carbon Emission Reduction program that empowers Eco- Citizen travelers to grow 10 trees for every domestic ticket and 100 trees for every international ticket purchased in Nigeria.

While the Fly-2-Green Nigeria is designed as an Eco-Citizen stimulus program that goes beyond open lifestyle incentives to create shared values, shared visions and shared possibilities that rally Eco Consumer driven Sustainable Aviation Value Chain Marketplace to drive Net Zero Emissions Footprint for the Aviation Industry.

“The Fly-2-Green Nigeria product promotes progressive partnerships and possibilities that profit the people and the planet through a smart Eco-Citizen Flyers Empowerment program that drives Future Forest Footprint projects through Green Sky Miles that guarantee 100M Fly-2-Green Carbon Neutral tickets totaling over 10Bn Eco-Citizens Flyer Miles to plant over 1Bn trees across Nigerian in 10 years in commemoration of the United Nations Decade for Eco-System Restoration in Nigeria”.
